How To Figure Out My Iphone Model

So far Apple has released 18 iPhone models. And with rumors of an iPhone SE 2 and other releases hitting shelves soon, that number is only going to rise more.

Prior to iOS 10.3, it wasn't easy to actually figure out what iPhone you had. And even now it's still pretty tricky. For iPhones running iOS 10.2.1, you'll need the serial numbers on the back to know which iPhone you have.

For any devices from the iPhone 5 or later running iOS 10.3 is later, you can learn the number easily. So wondering "how to tell iPhone model," we've got you covered. From the original iPhone through the latest iPhone, we've got you covered. Let's dive in now!

Different iPhone Models

First Question: What iOS is Your iPhone Running?

From iOS 10.3, it's been easy to figure out your iOS.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select About.

You'll see what version you're running. Be sure to also take note of your model number. You can use this to check your model number later.

How to Tell iPhone Model: iOS 10.3 or Later

iOS 10.3 didn't have the most spectacular features. But it did have some nice little updates for users.

One very helpful additional was the ability to quickly check what iPhone you under the settings. To do this:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. At the top, you'll see your Apple ID profile photo and your name. Tap on it.
  3. Scroll down until you see your device. The first device will be your iPhone; you will see the name of your device. Select that.
  4. Under Device Info, you'll see the Model.

That's it. You have your iPhone model!

How to Tell iPhone Model: iOS 10.2.1 or Earlier

Earlier iPhone Models

If you haven't upgraded to iOS 10.3 or have an iPhone that can't update beyond iOS 9.3.5, you'll need to find your iPhone model number. This also works for older iPads too.

  • Your iPhone's model number is located on the back near the bottom of the phone.
  • It's in extremely small print. You might need some extra light or even a magnifying glass!
  • It will say Model: A#### (The letter A followed by four numbers).
  • Write down the model number.

How to Tell iPhone Capacity

If you need to find the storage capacity of your iPhone (8 GB, 128 GB, 512 GB), you can find this under settings in IOS. Go to General > About > Capacity. The capacity section will be slightly less than what you have. For example, a 128 GB iPhone may show 120 GB.
